Musk pours $276 million into GOP midterms to defend Senate majority

Elon Musk has poured more than $276 million into Republican campaigns and political action committees since July. Campaign finance records his team shared with The New York Times put him at the top of the midterm donor list.

Most of that cash is pointed at one prize. Musk sent $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund. That was nearly 60 percent of his summer giving. The super PAC backs Republican Senate candidates across the country.

Just the News reported that the spending has given the Republican Party a boost across the country. The same account said it further cements the GOP’s financial advantage over Democrats, who continue to face money issues heading into the midterms.

Musk also donated more than $76 million to America PAC, the group he founded in 2024. The PAC is operating in seven key Senate battleground states.

Those figures now sit at the center of the Republican midterm machine: more than $276 million since July, $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, and more than $76 million to America PAC.

The Senate is the main target

This is not scattered goodwill. It is a concentrated bet on the chamber that drafts federal law and confirms judges.

The Senate Leadership Fund is the vehicle for that bet. Musk put nearly three-fifths of his summer contributions there, backing GOP Senate candidates nationwide.

Republicans already know how to put Democrats on defense when the public is with them, as they did after Democrats blocked popular voter ID rules and handed the GOP a midterm opening.

America PAC is doing the other half of the job. It is on the ground in those seven Senate battlegrounds, with still more money moving toward House races and other GOP groups.

The states themselves were not named in the records described this week. The intent was. Keep the Senate. Build turnout where a handful of races will decide who holds it.

A quieter donor, then a flood of cash

Musk oversees a technology empire that includes X and SpaceX. He is the world’s richest man. He also used to run a government shop.

At the start of the Trump administration, Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. He was tasked with streamlining the federal government and cutting waste.

He left after a public spat with President Trump. His support for Republicans then went quieter. The pair have since reconciled.

The money now on the table is not quiet. It is the largest known midterm fortune in the country, and it arrived after that repair.

That Senate majority is the same majority that has already forced Democrats into retreat, including when Chuck Schumer folded on a government shutdown and handed Republicans a political win.

President Trump has been holding rallies for GOP Senate candidates, including Jon Husted and Dan Sullivan. He has told the Republican base to vote as if he were on the ballot. Breitbart carried his Truth Social post:

“My Rallies, legendary they have already become, have made a tremendous difference with the enthusiasm of the Republican Party.”

Trump is campaigning as if these Senate races were his own. MAGA enthusiasm, in that account, is matching Democrats.

Democrats are bringing a short wallet to a long race

The New York Post put Musk’s total 2026 federal giving at $366 million. That sum exceeds what he spent on the 2024 Trump campaign.

It also dwarfs the roughly $100 million from George and Alex Soros. One man is funding a Republican Senate defense. A famous donor pair on the other side is not in the same league.

Just the News already described Democrats as heading into the midterms with money problems. The new totals make that gap concrete. Musk’s summer surge alone is more than $276 million. His broader federal total this cycle is higher still.

Senate Democrats have spent this Congress blocking and stalling, including when they sank House stock-trading limits after a voter ID standoff.

Cash will not revise that record. It will decide whether Republicans can keep the chamber that still can.

What America PAC says is at stake

Musk has not offered a public speech to match the checks. America PAC has not been shy. Spokesman Andrew Romeo told the New York Post:

“If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country,”

That is the argument the PAC wants in seven Senate battlegrounds. The $76 million is paying for get-out-the-vote work there, with additional millions routed to House and other GOP groups.

Romeo also said:

“These robust investments have allowed the G.O.P. apparatus to get its message out so Republicans can have a fighting chance to defy history,”

History, in midterm years, often runs against the president’s party. Musk is trying to buy the ground game and the air cover to beat that pattern in the Senate first.

The border warning is not an abstract talking point for the GOP conference. Senate Republicans have already moved to close a decades-old loophole that forces the release of detained illegal immigrants.

Control of the Senate decides which of those bills live and which die. That is why $158 million went to one super PAC, and why America PAC is working seven battlegrounds instead of spreading the money like confetti.

Some of the picture is still incomplete. The records described this week do not name the seven states. They do not spell out every remaining dollar beyond the Senate Leadership Fund and America PAC. And Musk himself has not been quoted saying he aims to “rescue” the majority.

The spending pattern says enough. Nearly 60 percent of his summer money went to the Senate super PAC. Another large share went to his own turnout operation in Senate battlegrounds. The rest is still Republican.

He strongly backed Trump in 2024. He ran DOGE, left after the public break, and then reconciled. His Republican support went quieter after he left the government. It is not quieter now.

Democrats can call that billionaire politics if they want. They still have to run against it with less money, in a Senate map that will not wait for their fundraising to catch up.

The world’s richest man put the largest known midterm fortune into keeping the Senate Republican. Voters still have to finish the job.
