Maine Democrat Graham Platner won’t apologize for mocking Purple Heart veteran

A Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Maine refused to apologize after a reporter confronted him about a social media post in which he said a Purple Heart recipient “didn’t deserve to live.” Graham Platner, a Marine Corps veteran running for the Democratic nomination, was approached by a Fox News reporter outside a market near his home and asked whether he regretted his remarks about Pfc. Ted Daniels, a soldier shot four times by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2012.

Platner didn’t say he was sorry. He pointed to his own service record instead.

The confrontation, captured on video, centers on a June 2019 Reddit post in which Platner tore into Daniels after watching footage of the soldier in a firefight with the Taliban. The post, since deleted, used language that would be difficult to explain away in any context, let alone from a man now asking Maine voters to send him to the United States Senate.

What Platner wrote about a wounded soldier

In the 2019 Reddit post, Platner wrote about Daniels: “D*** motherf***** didn’t deserve to live. At least his stupidity and fat a** wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt.” He went on: “Poor marksmanship on the Taliban’s part is the only reason this mouthbreather made it home, he managed to make every possible s*** decision possible when it comes to small unit combat.”

The post referred to video of Daniels in combat. Daniels was shot four times during the 2012 firefight and received the Purple Heart for his wounds.

When the Fox News reporter asked Platner directly whether he owed Daniels an apology, the candidate deflected. He cited his own military credentials rather than address the substance of what he had written.

“I did four tours in the infantry, any attempt to say that I disrespect veterans is slanderous and offensive.”

He continued: “Do you know how many of my friends have Purple Hearts, do you know how many of my friends got wounded? Yeah, a lot of them, thank you.” Then he got into his truck.

That’s not an apology. It’s not even close. It is a man wrapping himself in his own service to avoid answering for what he said about someone else’s.

Daniels responds

Daniels, the wounded veteran Platner targeted, did not let the moment pass quietly. Fox News Digital reported that Daniels responded directly to Platner’s conduct.

“People like this don’t say stuff like this to my face. It’s online, and that right there tells me, Graham, you’re a coward.”

That line lands harder than anything a political opponent could draft. A man who took four Taliban rounds is calling out a Senate candidate who mocked his survival from behind a keyboard, and who, when given the chance to make it right on camera, chose to walk away.

PTSD, endorsements, and a party that looks the other way

Platner has pointed to post-traumatic stress disorder as a reason for his social media posts. The source material does not indicate whether that PTSD claim is based on an official diagnosis or is self-reported. Either way, it raises a fair question: if Platner’s defense is that his own mental health led him to write that a fellow veteran “didn’t deserve to live,” what does that say about his fitness to serve in the Senate?

PTSD is real. Veterans who suffer from it deserve compassion and treatment. But citing it as a blanket excuse for vicious public attacks on a wounded soldier, while simultaneously running for federal office, is not a serious answer. It is a shield deployed for political convenience.

What makes the situation worse is who stands behind Platner. Breitbart News reported that he has been endorsed by Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Neither endorsement has been accompanied by any public comment on Platner’s remarks about Daniels, at least not in the available reporting.

Sanders and Warren have built careers on moral posturing. They lecture the country about decency, compassion, and the treatment of veterans. Yet their chosen candidate in Maine wrote that the Taliban should have finished the job on an American soldier, and they have said nothing.

Fetterman sounds the alarm from inside the party

Not every Democrat has stayed silent. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania offered a blunt assessment of what is happening in Maine’s Democratic politics, and of Platner specifically.

“There is kind of a small Communist takeover in Maine. Platner, he’s already announced that he’s an avowed Communist. He’s made that statement, and he put that online. Now, he’s going to be the Democratic nominee. So there is a [resurgence of] socialism, and that’s become more and more a part of it. And now there’s more, it’s like a marriage of the Palestinian, the anti-ICE, the abolish ICE, and now turning it into like an orgy of socialism here, and that’s sad. Because it’s supposed to be about labor, like unions. I am absolutely a proud pro-union Democrat, but the kinds of mess that are you see showing up in many of them, that is the worst impulses that our party continues, we just [can’t seem to] resist those things.”

Fetterman’s statement is remarkable for its candor. A sitting Democratic senator is publicly calling a fellow Democrat’s Senate candidacy part of a “Communist takeover.” He is describing the party’s direction in Maine as an “orgy of socialism” that has abandoned working-class union voters in favor of radical ideology.

When John Fetterman, not exactly a right-wing firebrand, is warning that his own party has lost the plot in a state, it’s worth paying attention to what that party is actually producing as candidates.

The real question for Maine voters

Platner’s Reddit post was not a careless typo or an out-of-context remark. It was a sustained, deliberate attack on a man who nearly died fighting for his country. He called Daniels too incompetent to survive. He said the Taliban’s aim was the only reason Daniels came home. He said Daniels “didn’t deserve to live.”

And when a reporter gave him the chance to walk it back, on camera, in plain daylight, outside a grocery store, he refused.

He didn’t say, “I was wrong.” He didn’t say, “I regret those words.” He said he did four tours and that questioning his respect for veterans was “slanderous.” That is not accountability. That is deflection dressed up in a uniform.

The open questions here are straightforward. Will Sanders and Warren stand by their endorsement now that the post is public? Will Maine Democratic voters accept a candidate who mocked a Purple Heart recipient’s survival? Will anyone in the Democratic establishment ask Platner to step aside, or will the party that claims to champion veterans look the other way because the candidate checks the right ideological boxes?

Fetterman, to his credit, has already answered. The rest of the party’s silence speaks for itself.

A man who says a wounded soldier didn’t deserve to come home alive has no business asking voters to send him to Washington. If the Democratic Party in Maine can’t see that, the voters will.
