The death of Yoseliani Ann Marte Ocasio, an 18-year-old woman found with a gunshot wound inside a Boston home owned by the husband of U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, has been ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. No arrests have been announced. No suspect has been publicly named. And the victim’s grieving mother says she wants answers.
Boston Police responded to a report of a shooting in the city’s Mattapan neighborhood on July 18 at approximately 1:52 p.m. Officers found Marte Ocasio suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Property records show the home belongs to Conan Harris, Pressley’s husband, as Fox News Digital reported.
The medical examiner’s homicide ruling, issued Thursday, moved the case from a reported shooting into confirmed criminal territory. Yet weeks after the young woman’s death, the public still has no word from Boston Police on suspects, a motive, or the status of the investigation.
Elenie Ocasio, the victim’s mother, spoke to Boston 25 in raw, unsparing terms. She described what she believes happened to her daughter and did not mince words about the person she holds responsible.
“This coward killed my baby. He put a gun to her head, took my baby in that house and left her to die.”
She continued with a promise that the truth would surface.
“My daughter didn’t deserve this. My daughter did not deserve this, and it’s all going to come out to light. Everything’s gonna come out.”
Elenie Ocasio referred to an unnamed male individual in her remarks. Law enforcement has not publicly confirmed or denied her account, and no charges have been filed based on the available reporting from Boston Police.
When the victim’s family first publicly identified her, it added a human dimension to what had initially been a sparse police bulletin, a young woman, just 18, dead inside a property tied to a sitting member of Congress.
Rep. Pressley, a Massachusetts Democrat, issued a statement to WCVB in which she characterized the death as a result of domestic violence. That framing is notable because nothing in the public record from Boston Police or the medical examiner’s office confirms a domestic violence classification.
“I am devastated about the death of Yoseliani Marte, an 18-year-old with so many dreams ahead of her, her life cut short by domestic violence. As the parent of a teenager, the thought of a young person violently losing their life in this way is beyond crushing. I stand with our community and everyone who loved Yoseliani as we grieve this deep loss. May we all honor her life and humanity and extend compassion to her loved ones as they navigate this heartbreaking tragedy.”
Pressley’s office also stated that neither the congresswoman nor her family were involved in the incident. The article notes that there is “no indication that the house’s ownership is connected to Yoseliani Ann Marte Ocasio’s death,” though it remains unclear who made that determination or on what basis.
Those are reasonable claims. But they leave significant gaps. How did an 18-year-old come to be inside a property owned by the husband of a U.S. congresswoman? Was the home being used as a rental? A video headline associated with the Fox News Digital report refers to it as a “rental home,” though the article body does not elaborate on who was renting the property or under what arrangement.
The case first drew public attention when Boston homicide detectives began probing the body found at the Harris-owned property, raising immediate questions about the connection between the victim, the home, and its politically prominent owner.
The list of unanswered questions is long, and growing longer with each passing week.
These are not gotcha questions. They are the basic facts any competent investigation should produce and any transparent public official should be willing to address. Pressley’s statement expressed grief and compassion. It did not address the property connection in any detail.
Fox News Digital conducted a video interview with Rep. Pressley, though the specifics of what was asked and answered about the property connection are not detailed in the reporting.
A homicide inside a property owned by the spouse of a sitting member of Congress would generate intense scrutiny regardless of party affiliation. That scrutiny is not unfair. It is not partisan. It is the minimum the public should expect.
The property ownership is a matter of public record. The victim is dead. The medical examiner has ruled it a killing. And yet the public information available remains strikingly thin, no named suspect, no arrest, no detailed timeline of events inside the home, and no explanation of who had access to the property on July 18.
Accountability in cases like these matters, particularly when questions about crime data transparency and law enforcement credibility already weigh on public trust in major American cities.
Boston, like many urban centers governed by progressive leadership, has faced persistent questions about violent crime and whether elected officials treat it with the seriousness it demands. Pressley’s statement was empathetic. Empathy, however, is not a substitute for transparency when a young woman is found dead in a property you and your family own.
The willingness of some in Congress to distance themselves from law enforcement concerns, as seen when House Democrats rejected a resolution honoring police even as assaults on officers reached a ten-year high, makes the silence around this case all the more conspicuous.
Yoseliani Ann Marte Ocasio was 18 years old. A GoFundMe page featured her photo. Her mother is publicly pleading for justice. The medical examiner has confirmed someone killed her.
Rep. Pressley called the death “beyond crushing.” Her office said the family was not involved. Those words have been spoken. Now the public needs facts, from Boston Police, from the congresswoman’s office, and from anyone with knowledge of what happened inside that Mattapan home on a July afternoon.
Grief is not accountability. Compassion is not an explanation. And an 18-year-old shot dead in a congressman’s property deserves a whole lot more than a carefully worded statement and silence.
